BNA1

Reference: BNA1 / Cat. No.

Period: Late Roman

Origin: Tunisia

Date: 300 – 380 AD

Description:
On discus: horseman brandishing lance in r. hand and holding round shield against l. arm, mounted on horse charging l.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Notes:
Cf. Hoff, 14; (subject on bottle) Herrmann & van den Hoek, 57.

Comments:
The context of the discus motif on other objects suggests the horseman may be intended as a venator or hunter. In addition to their military use, shields were also commonly carried as protection in wild beast hunts at this time (Bishop 2020, p.58).
