Date: 450 – 600 AD

Description:
On shoulder: tendrils with berries. Narrow channel flanked by tongue decoration between discus and end of nozzle.

Base with impressed planta pedis within base ring.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Size (cm): L. 8.0 (extant), W. 6.4, H. 3.4

Condition: Nozzle restored.

Notes:
Cf. BMC III, Q3171-6; Szentléleky, 208; Scorpan, Pontica 1978, 10 (found at Sacidava, Moesia).
Underside: BMC Type Eph.B.

Comments:
Although the imprint of a 'planta pedis' (footprint) on the base of earlier lamps sometimes contained a lampmaker's name, the shape itself seems to have been mainly generic and not restricted to a specific workshop. The imprint persisted into the Byzantine period, when it is common on "Late Ephesus" lamps until the 7th century and typically appears in a somewhat cruder form as on this example.
