Period: Hellenistic

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, possibly Egypt

Date: 200 – 20 BC

Description:
Body formed as grotesque head (probably Silenos) with wide nose, close-set eyes, puffed cheeks and protruding ears. Top with series of raised pellets representing curled hair or grapes, twin high ridges (horns?) behind rimmed filling-hole.

Long nozzle with flat top. Plain flat base.

Fabric: Pink clay with traces of dark brown slip.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Notes:
Cf. (subject) BMC I, Q578; Hayes, 144.
Twin ridges behind filling-hole may be false (unpierced) hinge-posts copying real ones for a hinged lid on metal examples (Perlzweig 1961, p.73; Bussière & Lindros Wohl, p.108).
