RNA4

Reference: RNA4 / Cat. No.

Period: Roman

Origin: North Africa

Date: 150 – 210 AD

Description:
Base marked MAVRCI
Mauricius, a recorded maker in North Africa.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Notes:
Cf. BMC III, Q1683; (mark) Deneauve, 823; Sanciu 2011, pp.186, 204.

Comments:
While the cursive signature on the base gives the impression that it was individually inscribed on the lamp itself, it would almost certainly have been inscribed only on the model archetype (patrix) from which the moulds for the lamp were made and is therefore merely a transferred reproduction (Bailey, Roman Crafts 1976, p.95).
