Description:
On discus: harbour scene, large building with deep ornamented cornice over two tiers, upper one a colonnade and lower one an arcade of eight arches, in foreground a body of water on which are two boats, standing fisherman in l. boat, two seated figures in r. boat rowing.

Finer example of identical scene noted on another lamp (details are clear).
Comments:
Although the waterfront scenes on lamps in this series were formerly thought to represent Alexandria, it has also been suggested that they may be views of the port at Carthage or Ostia (Bailey, Rome 1984). Alternatively, it is quite possible that the scenes are merely capricci (topographical or architectural fantasies).
